Tom Field - a regular to 4AoS - created RSpec, a wonderful piece of software which allows you to easily create calibrated profile graphs from raw spectra of stars. As I struggle to get to grips with my new video processing software Cyberlink PowerDirector 10, I'm stuck again by how easy and intuitive Tom has made RSpec. I was able to produce this kind of thing almost immediately:
The 3 main hydrogen absorption lines in the visual spectrum of Sirius (previous post)
And even turn images and raw spectra...
Orion Nebula
...into calibrated graphs revealing the chemical structure of M42: ionised oxygen (OIII forbidden line 5007 A) and Hydrogen (H-Alpha 6560 A) (previous post)
Whereas with PowerDirector, I'm still struggling with the basics, and wondering why it crashes every other time I try to use it.
Well, now Tom has got the recognition he deserves. RSpec has been awarded the prestigious Hot Product award by Sky and Telescope magazine. Congratulations!
