It could be argued that I'm taking far too much interest in David's fat balls, but any unhealthy focus on my part is far outweighed by David's apparent obsession with his balls himself.
I've just received another update from him on the subject:
Hi Iain,
Rattie in action, winning the battle of wits...
I held my breath before opening his attached photo, I don't mind telling you:
Almost there David. All you need now is a bucket of water underneath for when it lets go. Sorted!!

Looks like David's got about 10 balls there. Couldn't he just leave a couple on the ground for the rats?

Well, I could leave some for the rats, but I don't want to encourage them (what was one rat is now three): they dig holes in the lawn, and are opportunistic predators - and it'll soon be time for the birds to lay their eggs...
I really hoped that suspending the feeders out of jumping range from the ground and hedge would do the trick.

How about leaving some for the rats but laced with something? Obviously out of reach of the birdies.

I don't want to kill them - if only because I think they're cute, and smart.
I just want them to move on, away from the birds nests.
