I have examined the pieces more carefully and I see that that is a further imperfection on the bow tie area of the base. This photo was taken in strong sunlight so it shows up really well. It's not easily visible when you see the piece (hence I didn't notice it originally) but I always like to be as clear as possible so you know what you are getting:
I also notice that there is no Beswick mark on the base which made me concerned for its authenticity, but the web link above says that the fakes don't show the "crazing" on the glaze and this piece shows it very clearly on all 3 parts, which confirms it as a 1940s genuine piece.
